It Was Challenging But I Learnt A Lot
Dale Coyne Racing’s Verizon IndyCar Series rookie Ed Jones driving the No.19 Boy Scouts of America Honda was happy with his efforts on the opening day of the 2017 Verizon IndyCar Series on Friday at the Firestone Grand Prix of St Petersburg where in his first session he ended the morning in 18th with a time of 01:05.2213s completing 20 laps.
In the afternoon session, Jones completed 15 laps and ended the session in 20th place and speaking following the action, Jones commented by saying:
Today was a good day. It was challenging but I learned a lot. We’re going to make some changes overnight and I’ll be in a much better position tomorrow. It’s hard, but I felt much more comfortable in that second session and I’m looking forward to seeing how tomorrow pans out. Everything is a bit better compared to what I’ve been used to here in an Indy Lights car. You’re faster, you’re breaking a lot later, there’s more corner speed. On a street circuit, it’s tough to do that initially because the margin for error is so small. As much as you want to push as hard as you can and find the limit, you also don’t want to lose any track time by putting it in the wall. It’s a difficult situation but I think we did well today.
In the opening session on Friday morning, Sebastien Bourdais ended up in 13th place in the No.18 Dale Coyne Racing Honda with a 01:04.6900s completing 16 laps while in the afternoon, the Frenchman completed 20 laps and set the fifth fastest time of the session with a 01:02.9056s.
Speaking following the on track action he commented by saying:
It was a good recovery for us in Practice 2. Our car was surprisingly out of its window this morning so that was a disappointment, but we recovered pretty well this afternoon with P5 in practice. The car is still not dialed in to what it can do, so there’s definitely more potential. It feels like the Firestone reds have helped us quite nicely. I don’t think we really got the best out of them either. Overall, we still have some work to do, we need to identify the little issues and try to work on it and get it where we want it to be for tomorrow
