It’s Race Day At The Firestone Grand Prix Of St Petersburg
Following nearly six months of an off-season, today’s the day! The 2017 Verizon IndyCar Series season gets underway on the streets of St Petersburg with the 110 lap Firestone Grand Prix of St Petersburg.
Following Honda dominance in the opening three sessions over the weekend, it was the Chevrolet power of Team Penske’s Will Power in the No.12 Verizon car who took yet another Verizon P1 Award here at St Pete.
Speaking following his pole position lap, Power stated:
I saved a good set of tires for the end there. “They had one (fast) lap on them.
“That was everything I had at the end. I gave it all I had because I knew it was going to be close. I haven’t put that much energy into a lap for a while. I’m really happy.
Power is joined on the front row by Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon who has never won here before. The New Zealander who has primary sponsorship this weekend from GE LED Lighting and a new engine partner with Honda coming in to replace Chevrolet, was fastest in two of the three practice sessions.
Speaking following qualifying for the Firestone Grand Prix of St Petersburg, Dixon commented by saying:
Honestly, I think the team and Honda did the job; I just did not. “I made a pretty big mistake on my first lap, which definitely disappointed. … Hopefully tomorrow I can redeem myself
