Ed Carpenter Racing owner driver Ed Carpenter has confirmed that his team will field just two cars at this year’s 101st running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil next month.

Carpenter who has run three cars at the Brickyard in recent years has brought in JR Hildebrand to replace Josef Newgarden in the No.21 Chevrolet for 2017 and was expected to run the 500 with three cars with himself, Spencer Pigot and Hildebrand forming ‘Team America’ once again this season however, Carpenter has now ruled this possibility out.

Following Josef Newgarden’s crash at Texas Motor Speedway last season, Ed Carpenter Racing is now down to four cars and Carpenter told Autosport that the team were unable to come up with the right deal for a third car.

The American said that it meant that the team would have had to buy an extra car and that they were unwilling to run three cars with just one remaining spare chassis.

Pigot has admitted that his chances of getting a one off drive with another team for the Indy 500 are slim as he does not bring any money. The second race of the 2017 Verizon IndyCar Series season, the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach takes place this weekend with Pigot once again behind the wheel of the No.20 Loki Rising Star Racing Chevrolet.

The 101st running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil takes place on May 28. For ticket information visit – http://www.indianapolismotorspeedway.com/
