Alonso Indy 500 Run Is A Smart Move By McLaren
Former Formula One driver turned Sky Sports F1 HD commentator Martin Brundle has praised McLaren Honda’s decision to allow Fernando Alonso to compete in the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
It was announced on Wednesday that Alonso and McLaren in partnership with Andretti Honda will compete in the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500 in May.
Speaking during Friday’s coverage at the Bahrain Grand Prix, Brundle said:
I think in this case it’s very good news and a smart move by McLaren. “It’s smoke and mirrors really. It’s a very positive story in a difficult season, as long as he doesn’t hurt himself. It keeps Alonso happy. People say he’s going to miss Monaco. I’m not convinced he would have been in Monaco to be honest. He’s going to get thrashed relentlessly here as it’s a power circuit, pretty much the same in Sochi. He’ll be humbled in front of his fans at the Spanish GP.
Alonso will join Andretti Autosport at the Honda Grand Prix of Alabama at Barber Motorsports Park next weekend, round three of the 2017 Verizon IndyCar Series season.
