Team Penske driver Helio Castroneves says he is super excited to be returning to Gateway Motorsports Park on Tuesday for the Verizon IndyCar Series open test at the Illinois circuit in preparation for the venues return to the series schedule on August 26 this year.

The Brazilian is the last driver to have taken victory here. The Penske driver won here in 2003 leading a Brazilian podium with Tony Kanaan finishing second while Gil De Ferran was third.

Speaking to IndyCar.com Castroneves who finished Saturday nights Desert Diamond West Valley Phoenix Grand Prix in fourth place having secured his Verizon P1 Award of the season commented by saying:

I’m super excited (to go back to Gateway), to be honest. “First, because 1999, Hogan Racing, that’s the team I raced for, it was based down there. So I have kind of a sentimental (feeling) from St. Louis. That also was one of the races that I finished behind Michael Andretti, which I couldn’t believe it.

“When I was racing (that year), I remember, ‘Man, this is Michael right in front of me!’ I remember racing, which is amazing, (nearly) 20 years now, we’re going back. My memory is going back.

Castroneves says he likes the circuit because it has been good to him. Heading into the month of May, the Brazil goes to Indianapolis Motor Speedway seeking his fourth Indianapolis 500 title.

In his 20 year Verizon IndyCar Series career, Castroneves has won many races, scored 49 career pole positions but has yet to win the Verizon IndyCar Series title.

In his five previous Verizon IndyCar Series starts at Gateway Motorsports Park, Castroneves has never finished a race here outside the top ten, a fete he will be hoping continues this year. The Brazilian has shown at 41 he has lost none of his speed and competitiveness having scored two Verizon P1 Awards this season.
