Power Wins The Rainguard Water Sealers 600 As Carnage Comes To Texas

Team Penske’s Will Power in the No.12 Verizon Chevrolet took victory in the Rainguard Water Sealers 600 at Texas Motor Speedway overnight in what was one of the most dramatic and chaotic Verizon IndyCar Series races for years.

Power, who started the race from ninth place led 180 laps on his way to Victory Lane however that was only one of the many stories in an insane race.

The race saw an incredible 23 lead changes and a total of nine caution periods. Speaking following the event, which was Power’s 31st career win he commented by saying:

Over the moon to win here. “My second home and my wife is from here, so we spend a lot of time down here, so just an amazing feeling. It was a matter of getting to the front. “We talked about that in our pre-race strategy meeting, that track position is going to be everything because I know whoever would have the lead and (stay on) the bottom of the track would be very difficult to pass.

Chip Ganassi Racing’s Tony Kanaan in the No.10 NTT DATA Honda finished the race in second recovering from a 20 second stop and hold penalty after Verizon IndyCar Series officials found that he was to blame for a collision with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports James Hinchcliffe and Mikhail Aleshin as they went three wide at Turn 3.

The resulting accident on lap 152 caused a chain reaction which saw seven cars involved in the incident, the Schmidt Peterson Motorsports drivers, Carlos Munoz from AJ Foyt Racing, Ryan Hunter Reay, Dale Coyne Racing’s Ed Jones and Tristan Vautier.

Reigning series champion Simon Pagenaud in the No.1 DXC Technology Chevrolet was third for Team Penske. Graham Rahal had another great race as he came through the carnage to finish the race in fourth place just ahead of Harding Racing’s Gabby Chaves who had another incredible race finishing the event in fifth place.

Marco Andretti in the No.27 Honda for Andretti Autosport ended the race in sixth place just ahead of AJ Foyt Racing’s Conor Daly. Chip Ganassi Racing’s Max Chilton rounded out the field in eighth place.

Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon in the No.9 NTT DATA Honda was left fuming after Indianapolis 500 winner Takuma Sato made contact with the New Zealander in the closing stages of the race while they were challenging Power for the lead result in both cars retiring from the race.

Despite the retirement, Dixon heads to Road America leading the championship by 13 points from Simon Pagenaud. Pole sitter Charlie Kimball was forced to retire from the race lap 41 with a mechanical issue.
