Newgarden Happy To Be Hunted
Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden heads into this weekend’s ABC Supply 500, at Pocono Raceway leading the Verizon IndyCar Series championship by seven points from his team mate Helio Castroneves, a position he says he is happy to be in.
When asked by Paddock Eye if he prefers to be the hunted or the hunter he said that for him being ahead is the best way forward.
Newgarden is aiming to claim his third straight IndyCar Series win following back to back victories in the No.2 Chevrolet at the Honda Indy Toronto and the Honda Indy 200 at the Mid-Ohio sports car course. This follows his first win for Team Penske at the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama earlier this season.
Team Penske have all four of their drivers in the top five in the sports standings with four race remaining and when asked by Paddock Eye if this has changed the way the team operate over the course of the season, Newgarden said he hadn’t noticed anything different and that as far as he is concerned the drivers remain an open book within the team and as long as one of the Team Penske drivers wins the championship he’ll be happy but that obviously he wants to win the championship.
Newgarden leads the Verizon IndyCar Series standings on 453 points, Helio Castroneves in second on 446 points, defending series champion Simon Pagenaud is in fourth place on 436 points while Will Power is in fifth place on 401 points.
