Josef Newgarden’s 2017 Verizon IndyCar Series championship win was a record breaking feat for team owner Roger Penske.

It was The Captain’s 15th Series Championship victory.

Newgarden has become the fourth Penske driver to win the championship in their first season with the team joining Al Unser,  Al Unser Jr and Gil De Ferran.

Speaking about his crew, Newgarden said they are rockstars.

The Tennessee native said it was fitting winning the championship with Hum by Verizon sponsor on the car for the championship win.

Roger Penske said Newgarden is a super star and has helped galvanize the team.

It’s the people at our race shop that make the difference.

The race was made extra special for Newgarden as it was his 100th Verizon IndyCar Series start.

Speaking following the race ‘The Captain’ thanked Sarah Fisher and Wink Hartman for bringing Newgarden into the Verizon IndyCar Series.
