NASCAR team owner Tony Stewart says he believes that Danica Patrick could make a return to the Verizon IndyCar Series in 2018.

It was confirmed last week that Patrick will not race for Stewart Haas Racing in 2018 which immediately raised questions about the American’s future in motorsport.

However Stewart believes that Patrick is finished with her racing career just yet and hinted that she could return to the Verizon IndyCar Series next year.

Speaking to Monday Morning’s Dohnuts Podcast on NBC Sports Stewart said:

It’s up to her what she wants to do. She is a very talented racecar driver. She can do what she wants to do and has the ability to do what 95 percent of the drivers in the field don’t have the ability to do: She can stay in NASCAR, she can go back to IndyCar, she can go to sports car racing. Not all the drivers are talented enough to switch. She’s very versatile.

Patrick drove in the Verizon IndyCar Series with Rahal Letterman Racing from 2005 to 2006 before joining Andretti Green Racing in 2007.

The Roscoe native became the first female driver to win a major open wheel race when she won at Twin Ring Motegi in 2008.

Although the idea of Patrick returning to IndyCar in 2018 sounds fantastic it is unlikely as there are not many seats remaining for 2018.
