Formula One veteran Felipe Massa announced on Saturday that he will retire from Formula One at the end of the season.

The Brazilian joined the Williams Martini Racing team in 2014 from Ferrari and announced he would retire from Formula One at the end of the 2016 season however he was persuaded to return ro the Grove based outfit following Valtteri Bottas’ move to Mercedes following Nico Rosberg’s retirement.

Following Massa’s announcement, Williams deputy team principal Claire Williams commented by saying:

I would like to thank Felipe for all he has done for the team over the last four years. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with him. We are especially grateful that he agreed to postpone his retirement from Formula One for a year, after Valtteri joined Mercedes, which demonstrated the depth of the relationship we built during our time together. We appreciate that it wasn’t an easy decision for him to return, after having such an emotional send-off at the end of last year. On behalf of Sir Frank, and all the team, we give our very best wishes to Felipe for the future.”

Williams have confirmed they will announce the 2018 line-up in due course. Canadian Lance Stroll who made his Formula One debut this season has been extremely impressive and will be with the team in 2018.
