Carlin Racing’s Verizon IndyCar Series driver Max Chilton believes that double Formula One world champion Fernando Alonso did the series a favour by not winning the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil in May as Chilton feels that had the Spaniard won the race it would have made the rest of the IndyCar field look bad.

Chilton led the Indianapolis 500 with Chip Ganassi Racing in 2017 having started the race from 15th place and eventually finished the event in fourth place.

Alonso led the Indianapolis 500 for Andretti Autosport but was forced to retire from the race 21 laps from the end of the race.

In relation to Formula One versus the Verizon IndyCar Series, Chilton believes that IndyCar is better as there is more camaraderie between the drivers who travel together and park up beside each other in their RV’s.

Chilton will drive for the Chevrolet powered Carlin Racing team who will make their Verizon IndyCar Series debut in 2018 alongside his old Chip Ganassi Racing team mate Charlie Kimball.
