Newgarden Wins Sensational Honda Indy Grand Prix At Barber Motorsports Park

Team Penske’s defending Verizon IndyCar Series champion Josef Newgarden has gone back to back with victories at Barber Motorsports Park for the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama leading home Andretti Autosport’s Ryan Hunter Reay in the No.28 DHL Honda while Schmidt Peterson Motorsports James Hinchcliffe completed the podium.

The chaotic race was abandoned on Sunday due to poor weather with the event resuming on Monday as a timed event. Newgarden ended the event in the No.1 Hitachi Chevrolet over 10s ahead of Hunter Reay.

Robert Wickens ended the race just behind his Schmidt Peterson Motorsports team mate James Hinchcliffe in fourth place in the No.6 Lucas Oil Honda.

Dale Coyne Racing’s with Vasser Sullivan Racing’s Sebastien Bourdais in the No.18 SealMaster Honda ended the race in fifth place just ahead of Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon in the No.9 PNC Bank Honda.

Graham Rahal in the No.15 MiJack Honda ended the race in seventh place just ahead of his Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing team mate Takuma Sato in the No.30 MiJack/Panasonic Honda. Team Penske’s Simon Pagenaud in the No.22 Menards Chevrolet ended the race in ninth place while Marco Andretti rounded out the top ten for Bryan Herta Autosport.

Alexander Rossi endured a tough race and came home just outside the top ten in 11th place just ahead of AJ Foyt Racing’s Matheus Leist while Zach Veach who was suffering from flu all weekend ended the race in 13th place just ahead of Ed Carpenter Racing’s Jordan King.

Spencer Pigot was 15th for Ed Carpenter Racing just ahead of Juncos Racing’s Rene Binder while Gabby Chaves for Harding Racing was 17th just ahead of AJ Foyt Racing’s Tony Kanaan.

Zachary Claman DeMelo ended the day in 19th place just ahead of Chip Ganassi Racing’s Ed Jones in the No.10 NTT DATA Honda who suffered mechanical issues towards the end of the race. Will Power and the two Carlin drivers Max Chilton and Charlie Kimball retired from the race.
