Watkins Glen International boss Michael Printup has confirmed that the New York circuit have held preliminary talks with Verizon IndyCar Series officials about the venue returning to the schedule but he admits that it may not happen until 2021.

Watkins Glen returned to the Verizon IndyCar Series schedule in 2016 following the collapse of the Boston Grand Prix.

The race organizers signed a three year contract with the Verizon IndyCar Series however the venue was dropped from the calendar at the end of the 2017 season in favour of a return to Portland which takes place later this month.

The circuit is a favourite among drivers, teams and fans in the Verizon IndyCar Series and Printup says that the series belongs at the circuit and he hopes to hold formal talks with president of competition and operations Jay Frye in February 2019.

Andretti Autosport’s Alexander Rossi scored his first road course win at Watkins Glen in 2017 having dominated the event taking pole and winning the race.
