Watkins Glen International circuit boss Michael Printup has said that they would consider moving the date of the IndyCar race at the New York venue to ensure that the venue returns to the calendar in 2021.

Paddock Eye reported yesterday that Printup has held preliminary talks with IndyCar president of competition and operations Jay Frye about the venue returning to the calendar in 2021.

Printup has now stated the reason the initial return to Watkins Glen for IndyCar didn’t work out was due to the fact that the race took place over the Labor Day weekend and that this had not been ideal for the series or the circuit and that is why the race was dropped for this season despite having a three year contract and was replaced by Portland.

The first race that IndyCar held on their return to the Glen in 2016 was won by Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon and it was Target’s last win in the Verizon IndyCar Series.

The 2017 race was dominated by Andretti Autosport’s Alexander Rossi in the No.98 NAPA Auto Parts Honda.

Printup said that ideally he would like to have IndyCar back at the Glen at the end of August, a week or two after NASCAR visit the venue in New York state. Printup has also confirmed that formal discussion with Jay Frye and other IndyCar officials will begin in February next year.
