McLaren Still Have Time To Pursue A 2019 IndyCar Programme
McLaren still have plenty of time to announce a full-time 2019 IndyCar programme. The Woking based outfit have been considering diversifying their racing programme by entering the Verizon IndyCar Series in 2019.
Many people have said that at this stage it is too late for the outfit to pursue an IndyCar entry for 2019 however, it isn’t. Carlin Racing are a prime example as to why it is not to late to make an announcement as the British team didn’t announce that they were entering IndyCar for the 2018 season until December 2017.
Paddock Eye understands that McLaren will partner with Andretti Autosport with Fernando Alonso in one of their two cars while Colton Herta has emerged as another driver who could potentially join the IndyCar grid in 2019 having tested for Harding Racing in Poetland on Friday.
This would be a great move for McLaren having a mix of an experienced driver in Alonso and a rookie in Herta just like AJ Foyt Racing had for this season with series veteran Tony Kanaan and rookie Matheus ‘Matt’ Leist.
McLaren CEO Zak Brown has confirmed that Fernando Alonso may test an IndyCar in the Autumn once his racing schedule has settled down. Formula One may be on their summer break however Fernando Alonso will be racing in the FIA World Endurance Championship 6 Hours of Silverstone which takes place in two weeks time. The Spaniard goes into the race leading the championship.
