Former IndyCar driver Tony Stewart says that before even attempting the Indianapolis 500 he would race at Pocono the previous year to get back up to speed with the cars.

Speaking to the media at an event at Texas Motor Speedway on Wednesday Stewart said that he wouldn’t do what Danica Patrick did and just step back into the car.

Stewart said:

Pocono is what we had kind of figured was the best scenario because that’s kind of the same package that you run at (IMS) so if we were going to do it, you’d probably see us run Pocono the year before.“

The news rules Stewart out for running the 2019 Indianapolis 500 and it means that he would compete in 2020 at the earliest if he decided to do it at the age of 49.

Stewart said he had held talks with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, he has an offer from Roger Penske and has also spoken with Andretti Autosport and believes his former team Chip Ganassi Racing could be interested too.

Schmidt Peterson Motorsports could also be an option for him given his links to the team through the One Cure partnership.
