Fernando Alonso says that the priority for him in 2019 is competing in the Indianapolis 500 with McLaren next May.

The 103rd running of the Indianapolis 500 is exactly six months away and speaking at the Bahrain International Circuit on Monday during his car swap with NASCAR star Jimmie Johnson, Alonso said that he remains a McLaren driver for 2019 and that their priority is the Indianapolis 500.

Following Sunday’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix during the drive back to the pit-lane, McLaren CEO Zak Brown came on the radio to Alonso to say let’s go after the triple crown.

McLaren have brought in former Force India deputy team principal Robert Fernley as president of their IndyCar programme. Fernley will oversee their 2019 Indianapolis 500 programme and will evaluate whether or not it is feasible for the team to compete full-time in the series from 2020.

At this moment in time, McLaren have no plans to compete in other IndyCar races in 2019 however they could change depending on Fernando Alonso’s schedule next year and whether or not he wants to race in some other IndyCar events in 2019.

Paddock Eye understands that McLaren are seriously considering the possibility of entering two cars into the 103rd running of the Indianapolis 500.
