Hulkenberg And Renault Shine On Final Day Of Opening Barcelona Test

The Renault F1 Team had a very strong final day of the opening pre season test at the Barcelona Circuit Du Catalunya on Thursday as despite stopping out on track on track with just under an hour to go Nico Hulkenberg set the fastest time of the day with a 01:17.393s.

Speaking after completing 24 laps the German said:

We had some good running today. It was nice to get a feel for the car on shorter runs and assess the behaviour and different set up preferences. We didn’t get as many laps in as we’d have liked today, but that’s part of testing and these things happen. It was a shame to stop on track to close our day, but we will be looking into that to see what’s happened.

Having set the fastest time this morning, Scuderia Toro Rosso’s Alex Albon ended the day in second place in the Honda powered STR14.

Daniel Ricciardo was third fastest for the Renault F1 Team with a fastest time of 01:17.785s.

Speaking following the day’s action the Australian said:

I am feeling more and more comfortable each time I step into the car. We didn’t put in as many laps as we’d planned, this morning, but that’s testing and we were caught up with smaller issues which meant we were stuck inside the garage. The timing looks good on paper but it is impossible to be sure of the respective plans to put our lap times in perspective.

Mercedes AMG PETRONAS F1 Team’s Valtteri Bottas and defending champion Lewis Hamilton ended the test in fourth and fifth place respectively having completed a combined total of 115 laps for the day.

Scuderia Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc was sixth fastest with a time of 01:18.046s having completed 138 laps.

Lando Norris completed 132 laps in the McLaren Renault MCL34 with a fastest time of 01:18.431s ending the day in seventh place.

Alfa Romeo Racing’s Antonio Giovinazzi was eighth fastest in the Ferrari powered C38 completing the most laps of the day with 154 laps completed with a fastest time of 01:18.511s.

The Rich Energy Haas F1 Team’s Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen ended the day in ninth and tenth place respectively.

Aston Martin Red Bull Racing’s Pierre Gasly was 11th fastest in the Honda powered RB15 completing 146 laps. Lance Stroll was 12th fastest with a time of 01:19.665s and speaking following the day’s action the Canadian said:

It’s great to have a week of testing under our belt and I am feeling positive. We covered some good mileage today and went through most of our test programme: it’s been a good start and we can build on it next week. My confidence and comfort with the team have grown: they have given me all the tools I need as a driver. They have been very supportive and this is what helps me get the best out of myself and the car. I am looking forward to next week and doing more set-up work so that we can bring the quickest possible car to Melbourne.”

Rokit Williams Racing’s George Russell and Robert Kubica rounded out the order in 13th and 14th place respectively.
