McLaren IndyCar president Bob Fernley says that the team’s partnership with Carlin Racing ahead of the 103rd running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbrige on May 26 is a safety blanket.

Speaking at the Firestone Grand Prix of St Petersburg last weekend, Fernley said:

We want to build a good base knowledge of what we’re doing. “We put one chassis over to McLaren, so we can bring that forward and understand what’s going on. This car will be used for the main NTT IndyCar Series program. The test chassis that we would use at the two track tests that we do is being built by Carlin in Florida. We’re looking at supervising both of them but fundamentally split the resources in order to make sure we can deliver by the end of March.

McLaren have made it clear that they fully focused on the 103rd running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbrige on May 26.

When asked about the possibility going full time in the NTT IndyCar Series in 2020, McLaren Sporting Director Gil De Ferran refused to comment but said that they are just focused on the 500.
