Ganassi Says Full Time IndyCar Drivers Should Be Guaranteed Indy 500 Spots
NTT IndyCar Series team owner Chip Ganassi says that the full time drivers in the series should be guaranteed spots in the Indianapolis 500 field.
Ganassi says he agrees with fellow team owner and 17 time Indianapolis 500 winner Roger Penske in that the drivers and teams who make the series what it is today should be given automatic spots in the main race of the IndyCar championship.
Bump Day returned to the Indianapolis 500 last season and saw Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports James Hinchcliffe miss the 102nd running of the Indianapolis 500 having failed to qualify for the race.
Ganassi says that if the 23 or 24 spots on the grid are guaranteed for the full time series drivers there would still be space in the field of 33 cars for one off entries.
Speaking to the media in Long Beach on Sunday morning, Ganassi said that he hasn’t asked all of the team owners but he believes that they would be on the same page as him and Penske when it comes to the full time entries in the Indianapolis 500.
Ganassi also understands that fans may not want ‘locked in entries’ as they love the tradition of Bump Day.
