Team Penske’s defending Indianapolis 500 winner Will Power in the No.12 Verizon 5G Chevrolet was the fastest driver as testing got underway at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Tuesday.

Power who set a fastest speed of 229.745MPH commented on the day’s action saying:

“All the big speeds came from big tows.

“It’s kind of hard to judge the true speeds of cars right now by themselves. “You don’t know what aero configuration people are running, whether they’re doing qualifying sims or they’re in race trim. We don’t know where we stack up, honestly, as far as true speed.”

Indianapolis Grand Prix winner Simon Pagenaud in the No.22 Menards Chevrolet was second fastest with a speed of 229.703MPH.

Helio Castroneves in the No.3 Pennzoil Chevrolet was fourth fastest while Josef Newgarden was 17th.

Power concluded by saying:

“Obviously, the speed was a big tow, but definitely a different car with that tire that Firestone brought. We’ve had to make quite a few adjustments to what we ran last year. I mean, I started with what I raced last year and it definitely was not in the window. So, (we) made a lot of adjustments at the end. Obviously, (we’ll) keep working on that tomorrow and see how we progress. I would say that we weren’t very good in traffic the first day, but by the end, felt way more comfortable.”
