The Verizon IndyCar Series looks extremely healthy as the sport gears up for the opening race weekend of the 2018 season with Firestone Grand Prix of St Petersburg.

A healthy crowd on Friday watched a field of 24 drivers swing their cars around the streets of St Pete.

Michael Shank Racing have teamed up with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports with Jack Harvey driving a partial programme for 2018.

Trevor Carlin has moved up from Indy Lights bringing two of his former drivers, Charlie Kimball and Max Chilton over from Chip Ganassi Racing.

Ricardo Juncos has entered the sport for a partial programme with Rene Binder and Indy Lights champion Kyle Kaiser.

In the opening practice session of the season on Friday, rookie Matheus Leist showed that AJ Foyt Racing’s testing pace over the winter is real as he lead the opening practice session in St Pete.

The series has added Portland to the schedule for 2018 which will surely be a favourite among the drivers and fans alike.

Away from the series, the 102nd running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil at the end of May looks set to have one of the strongest fields in a long time. A number of big announcements were made this week starting with the news that Conor Day will drive in a USA backed Honda for Dale Coyne Racing.

We also had the news that Danica Patrick will drive the No.13 GoDaddy Chevrolet for Ed Carpenter Racing in May in her final Indianapolis 500.

On Friday it was announced that Oriole Service will drive a Scuderia Corsa Honda with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing for the 102nd running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil.

The Verizon IndyCar Series is extremely strong in 2018 and it is going to be a season to remember starting with the Firestone Grand Prix of St Petersburg.
