Verizon IndyCar Series driver Charlie Kimball has had a busy build up to the Desert Diamond West Valley Casino Phoenix Grand Prix this weekend as the Californian Carlin driver headed to Detroit on Wednesday, battling the snow in the motor city to promote the Chevrolet Dual in Detroit presented by Lear.

Kimball, who has type 1 diabetes spent time in the Detroit Medical Center’s Children’s Hospital spending time with kids and signing autographs for his young fans.

Speaking about the visit, Kimball commented by saying:

You personally draw strength and inspiration from these kids and families who are also dealing with diabetes. “I met a young man named Evan, a Wayne State University student, who is 19 and has had diabetes since he was 5. I learned a lot from Evan’s longevity in combating the disease. I don’t know what they get in return from me, but I hope it’s inspiration to do whatever they choose in life … be it a professional athlete, a CEO of a Fortune 500 company … what ever they want to be. That’s my goal.

From the children’s hospital, Kimball was a guest of the Detroit Pistons where he delivered the game ball as the team took on the Philadelphia 49ers.

Speaking about this weekend’s Desert Diamond West Valley Casino Phoenix Grand Prix at ISM Raceway, Kimball who scored a podium in Detroit in 2014 is looking forward to this weekend’s race:

I’m looking forward to going back to ISM Raceway with the No. 23 Tresiba Chevy Carlin team. With the three back-to-back upcoming Verizon IndyCar Series race weekends, there are lots of points to collect before May. It’s nice that we have some track data from the open test in February, so we’ll be using what we learned to quickly get up to speed as soon as we arrive in the desert. Since the checkered flag in St. Pete, we’ve had just one day on track, testing at Barber, but we’ve really worked to maximize every single lap as a learning opportunity. We’ll see how it plays out with the warmer temperatures, tires, and strategy in Phoenix. We’ll control what we can and adapt when needed.

The Chevrolet Dual in Detroit presented by Lear takes place on June 2 and 3, for more information visit – http://detroitgp.com/tickets/
