AJ Foyt Racing’s Tony Kanaan and Matheus ‘Matt’ Leist had mixed fortunes on the opening day of practice for Sunday’s Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. In the morning session on Friday, Kanaan ended the session in ninth place with a fastest time of 01:08.9675s while in the second session he ended up in 12th place with a fastest time of 01:09.5770s and speaking following the day of action the Brazilian said:

Decent day…trying to find the right setup. This morning was a little bit better than this afternoon.  We tried a couple different things – a big swing just to see. Friday we have two free sessions so we’re learning for tomorrow. We have a lot of work to do, but we’re still up there. We just have to keep working to improve a little bit more. All in all, it was a trouble-free day, which is quite good.

Matheus ‘Matt’ Leist finished the opening session in the No.4 ABC Supply Chevrolet in 22nd place while in the second session the Brazilian finished the day out in 23rd place and speaking following his time in the car he commented by saying:

The car was different to drive, we were having some problems in the turning in mid-corner, but it was also my first day here, learning the track and everything. Tomorrow is a new day, we can only move forward from here. Hopefully, we will have a great car tomorrow, we’ll keep working hard and hope to have a great weekend.
