The Sauber F1 Team had what they described as a productive opening day to winter testing as preparations for the 2017 Formula One season officially got underway at the Barcelona Circuit Du Catalunya in Spain on Monday.
During the day the Hiwil based outfit focused on aero work, and set up work. Speaking about the day of running which saw him set the 11th fastest time of the day, a 01:26.841s after completing 72 laps, Marcus Ericsson commented by saying:
It is great to finally be back in the car again after a long winter. The new car was fun to drive, and it is nice to feel that there is more potential. We had some minor issues, but on the other hand it was the first time we were running the car properly. Overall, it has been a productive day. I completed 70 laps overall, which is a good effort for test day one. Now we need to go from here to have a successful first week of testing. The two main areas, which I feel are the biggest differences compared to last year are that the car is faster in high-speed corners and the braking performance is better.
On Tuesday, Anotonio Giovinazzi who is filling in for the injured Pascal Wehrlein will drive the Ferrari powered C36.
Pascal Wehrlein has confirmed that his recovery following his accident at the Race of Champions last month is going well and he expects to be given the all clear to participate in the second winter test in Barcelona next week.
