Andretti Autosport had their strongest start to a race weekend of the 2021 NTT IndyCar Series to date as practice took place on Friday for Saturday’s Detroit Grand Prix on Belle Isle where Alexander Rossi in the No.27 AutoNation Honda ended the session in fifth place with a time of 01:17:6587s and speaking following the action the Californian said:

“We’re thrilled to be back here in Detroit – I love this track. We learned that the Aeroscreen didn’t really change a whole lot with a car we’ve been happy with here in previous years. Everything translated out there today, which is obviously a positive. I feel like we still have a bit more to get out of the car, which we’ll need because we’re still four tenths off. Overall, I’d say it was a positive session.”

Colton Herta in the No.26 Gainbridge Honda ended the day in sixth place with a time of 01:17.8121s and speaking following the session he commented saying:

“We did well today. The Gainbridge Honda was fast. We didn’t quite get all of it on the (Firestone Alternate) Red tires. That red flag at the end kind of burned me a little bit. Most importantly the car is feeling good.”

Ryan Hunter Reay in the No.28 DHL Honda ended the day in 10th place with a time of 01:18:2033s and speaking following the action he commented saying:

“It was a hot and productive practice session here in Detroit. I think our pace right now in the DHL Honda on the (Firestone Alternate) Reds is top five or six, so we just need to build on that for tomorrow.”

James Hinchcliffe in the No.29 Genesys Honda was eleventh fastest with a time of 01:18:4961s and speaking following the action he commented saying:

“Obviously it’s a pretty tough format here in Detroit with only one practice session before the doubleheader. Luckily the Andretti Autosport team did a great job preparing these cars and they all rolled off pretty quick. I think it’s probably a tale of a thousand woes in terms of getting a clear track and getting a good lap on your (Firestone Alternate) Reds. We got held up a little bit, but I’m sure a lot of guys did as well. The important thing is that the Andretti cars all seem to be in the ballpark, top-10-ish, which is where we want to be. Hopefully we can tune on the Genesys Honda a little bit overnight and be strong in qualifying tomorrow.”
