Alex Palou can win win his NTT INDYCAR SERIES championship later today in Portland if he finishes in the top three regardless of what his teammate Scott Dixon does.
The Spaniard heads into the 110-lap race with a healthy 74-point lead in the championship following a sensational season for him and the No.10 The American Legion Honda crew.
Scott Dixon in the No.9 PNC Bank Chip Ganassi Racing Honda is going for his seventh series championship and is aiming for a threepeat having taken back-to-back victories at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course and last time out at World Wide Technology Raceway.
Dixon had a slight advantage in qualifying as he starts the race from fourth place while Palou will line up in fifth.
It will be interesting to see how the Ganassi drivers do. Even if Dixon wins he needs Palou to have a bad day and finish the race outside the top ten.
Palou’s magic number is 35 points, if he wins the race it’s all over but equally if he leaves Portland tonight leading by 53 points it is also over.
Scott Dixon just needs to have a Scott Dixon race.
The green flag for the BitNile.com Portland Grand Prix dropsat 3.15PM ET / 8 15PM in Ireland and the United Kingdom.
It’s all eyes on Palou and Dixon. What will happen next?
