Schmidt Peterson Motorsports Mikhail Aleshin is set to stay with the team in 2017 according to team co-owner Sam Schmidt.

The Russian who had a breakthrough 2016 season in the Verizon IndyCar Series in the No.7 SMP Racing Honda held talks with Andretti Autosport with a view to replacing Carlos Munoz in the No.26 Honda, however those talks did not progress according to Schmidt.

Aleshin secured his first ever Verizon IndyCar Series podium this season when he finished the ABC Supply 500 at Pocono Raceway in second place behind race winner Will Power and just ahead of Ryan Hunter Reay. Aleshin also secured his first ever Verizon P1 Award at Pocono Raceway. Aleshin ended the season in 15th place on 347 points.
