Former Verizon IndyCar Series driver and Formula One champion Mario Andretti believes that both Fernando Alonso and McLaren will shine in the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil next month.
Andretti who won the Verizon IndyCar Series championship four times in 1965,66,69 and 84.
Mario also took victory at the Indianapolis 500 in 1969. The Italian American claimed three Indianapolis 500 pole positions in 1966,67 and 87. Andretti believes that the time could not be better for Alonso and McLaren to compete in the Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil.
Andretti feels that it is the perfect time for Alonso as he is still in his prime and that right now in Formula One with McLaren they are not doing anything at the moment.
Andretti believes that Alonso’s and McLaren’s arrival is ‘truly awesome’ for the Verizon IndyCar Series, the Indianapolis 500 and Andretti Autosport (his son Michael’s team) who have partnered with McLaren and Alonso for the most famous motor race on the planet.
Andretti believes that Alonso won’t have any problem adapting to the Dallara DW12 Honda chassis but that the real challenge for the Spaniard will be driving on an oval.
