Two time Formula One world champion Fernando Alonso is free to join Andretti Autosport for the 104th running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge in May according to McLaren Racing SP CEO Zak Brown.

Brown’s comments come as Andretti Autosport owner Michael Andretti has confirmed that his team who have won multiple Indy 500’s in recent years are close to reaching a deal with Fernando Alonso.

Reports in the US suggest that Andretti is looking for a sponsor for Alonso and not just to run the Indy 500 but other races too.

Paddock Eye understands that as well as his five regular drivers of Ryan Hunter Reay, Marco Andretti, Alexander Rossi, Zach Veach and new arrival Colton Herta, that James Hinchcliffe could be handed a one drive for the Indy 500 along with Fernando Alonso meaning Andretti Autosport will potentially run seven cars in the Indy 500.
