New McLaren Executive Director Zak Brown has firmly closed the door on the suggestion that Fernando Alonso will leave the team to join Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes in 2017.
The double world champion was immediately linked to retiring world champion Nico Rosberg’s race seat at Brackley, however Brown has confirmed to Sky Sports F1 that:
We have a contract with Fernando and he is very happy. Obviously he wants to be winning races, as we do but I am not worried about that scenario, (Alonso leaving the team). Brown’s comments come less than 24 hours after another world champion, Sebastian Vettel ruled both himself and his team mate Kimi Raikkonen out of the running for the vacated Mercedes seat.
Meanwhile McLaren Racing Director Eric Boullier, who is aware of the rumours has confirmed that he advised Alonso against reuniting with Hamilton at Mercedes. The Frenchman also reiterated Brown’s assertion that the Woking based outfit have a contract in place with Alonso.
At the time of Alonso re-joining McLaren for 2015, then McLaren Chairman, Ron Dennis confirmed that the Spaniard had a straight up three year contract with no options.
