McLaren Honda Andretti driver Fernando Alonso says he was happy with his first day in the No.29 Honda at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Wednesday.
The double Formula One world champion said that everyone was looking after him especially with Marco Andretti and Gil De Ferran and no they have plenty of data to pour through over the next few weeks.
Alonso said that when he was growing up as a kid he never dreamt of racing in Indy let a lone F1 and that his first memories of the Indianapolis 500 was Jacques Villeneuve and then again with Juan Pablo Montoya in 2000 and then Formula One’s first race here in 2000 prior to him entering F1.
Alonso went on to say that the car was more or less what he expected after the simulation and now he is more focused on the work they have done.
He said that they prepare for the race differently now because they have done the work today and now they have to poor through the data recorded on track. Alonso completed a comprehensive test over the course of the day completing a staggering 110 laps of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Speaking about driving in traffic on the oval he said it will be the biggest challenge and he will go step by step with that in order to get up to speed, he also said setting up the car will be a challenge how they constantly change the car. He said at the moment the car is driving him around the speedway and not the other way at this moment in time.
Alonso said however that he is with the perfect team to learn from and is sure he will be ready for the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil on May 28.
It is pure adrenaline feeling the respect of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the car. Alonso went on to say that the car is more predictable in Formula One and in IndyCar it is more raw, more about racing.
