McLaren Honda Andretti driver Fernando Alonso took just 50 laps to get up to speed and pass the Indianapolis 500 rookie orientation programme meaning that he is free to continue the programme and qualify for the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil.
Verizon IndyCar Series legend Mario Andretti said that he was extremely impressed with how Alonso got up to speed so quickly.
Despite the threat of rain at the speedway, the two time Formula One world champion took everything in his stride and got the job done. The rest of the test will allow him just to for it. Team owner Michael Andretti told Robin Miller:
That was great, it was perfect he did what he needed to do, he can just go and play now. So, far everything has been perfect. He gets it. He adjusted his line for the under-steer, he is the real deal. This are going really smoothly. It’s exciting, we were working hard to get it done. The big thing is to be associated with McLaren.
