McLaren Honda Andretti driver Fernando Alonso in the No.29 Honda was quite happy with how Fast Friday went for him at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Friday.
The day was interrupted for a number of hours due to rain and thunder and lightening storms in the Indianapolis area. Alonso ended the day with the fourth fastest speed of 231.827mph and a no tow lap of 230.966mph.
The double Formula One world champion ended the week as the fastest rookie and completed 46 laps and speaking following the day of action he commented by saying:
It’s going to be interesting to see what trim configuration the team decides to ultimate. We will see tomorrow’s conditions, how they are and how much we can push in terms of trimming the car. Tomorrow is about doing a good four laps, hopefully in the first nine and wait for Sunday for the real final classification. Tomorrow is another day, but for me, in my case, it is another learning day. We’ll see what we can do but there’s not much pressure for tomorrow.
Alonso who was drawn 33rd by McLaren Executive Director Zak Brown for Saturday’s opening qualifying session, meaning he will be the last out on track tomorrow afternoon went on to say:
Today was obviously a little bit stressful with the rain coming and we tried to fit as many laps as possible (before the rain),” Alonso said. “Yes, we managed to fit another two (qualifying simulation) runs late in the day. We’re quite happy. It was another day of learning those extra speeds, and hopefully tomorrow we have a good (qualifying run).
Alonso completed the most number of laps of any of the 33 drivers during the practice week completing 318 laps over the five days.
