Fernando Alonso would be a great addition to the IndyCar Series grid if McLaren join the series in 2019.
The Woking based outfit are working with the support of the series to be racing in the series from next season and Fernando Alonso has been tipped to be one of their drivers. president of Hulman and Company, the owners of IndyCar and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Mark Miles says that an announcement will likely come at the end of the year.
Alonso announced on Tuesday that he will not race in Formula One in 2019 as he looks for a new challenge in his career and racing in the IndyCar Series would be the new challenge that he seeks.
The Spaniard would have to adapt to racing on ovals as although he has competed at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway the other ovals events in the series have different characteristics to Indy. Pocono however as Andretti Autosport’s Ryan Hunter told Paddock Eye yesterday Pocono is similar to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Alonso has not yet driven the new universal aero kit however a test plan is in the works according to McLaren CEO Zak Brown.
When Alonso competed in the 102nd running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil last season he was extremely engaging with the fans of the sport and embraced the way the Verizon IndyCar Series works, even down to how he traveled around the paddock, (on a skateboard) was fun for everyone.
