The 101st running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil takes place next month and on Wednesday it was announced that double Formula One world champion Fernando Alonso will compete in the race with in an Andretti Autosport prepared McLaren Honda.
The news means that an old motorsport rivalry will be re-established as Alonso will compete on the famous brick-yard alongside his old Formula One rival Juan Pablo Montoya who is returning to the Indianapolis 500 with Team Penske.
Alonso and Montoya raced together in Formula One with Renault and McLaren respectively. It will be the first time since ironically the 2006 United States Grand Prix at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway that the pair will be competing together. Montoya is returning to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the month of May with the Grand Prix of Indianapolis and the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil while Fernando Alonso is competing at the Brickyard as a rookie.
