Andretti Autosport owner Michael Andretti confirmed on Tuesday that he has put his driver Ryan Hunter Reay’s DHL sponsored 2014 Indianapolis 500 winning Andretti Autosport chassis up for auction…with one catch!
The winning bidder will not get to drive away with the car the day of the auction. The chassis will continue to be used and will be delivered to the new owner fully restored by Andretti Autosport complete with the 2014 livery at the conclusion of the 2018 Verizon IndyCar Series.
Speaking about this unique item, David Gooding, President of the Gooding and Company Classic car auction house commented by saying:
The sale of this lot is unprecedented in modern motorsports.
Andretti Autosport owner and CEO Michael Andretti commented by saying;
The opportunity to auction off our 2014 Indy 500-winning — and still active — racecar and provide the winning bidder with an immersive ownership experience with our team delivers a great way to celebrate an iconic moment in our team’s history as we prepare for the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500,
Unfortunately for the new owner they will receive just the chassis as the engine still belongs to Honda, despite this however Mr Gooding believes the car will fetch somewhere between $600,000 – $750,000.
