The news on Wednesday that Michael Andretti’s Verizon IndyCar Series tewm Andretti Autosport have partnered with McLaren and Fernando Alonso for the 101st Indianapolis 500 took many by surprise however Andretti and McLaren have a history.
At the Italian Grand Prix in 1992, McLaren announced that Michael Andretti would partner Ayrton Senna for the 1993 Formula One season.
Andretti scored points on three occassions including a podium finish at the Italian Grand Prix before returning to the United States and going on to establish his own Verizon IndyCar Series team.
Alonso and McLaren join Andretti the defending Indianapolis 500 champions who took victory with 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series rookie Alexander Rossi.
Andretti Autosport are powered by Honda who have taken victory in the opening two rounds of the 2017 Verizon IndyCar Series season.
It is going to be extremely interesting to see how the partnership gets on.
