The Verizon IndyCar Series championship deciding GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma takes place on Sunday at the Sonoma Raceway.
The 2017 season has been a real rollercaster ride and for five drivers it all comes down to double points on Sunday.
Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden heads into the final race leading the championship by three points from Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon.
Penske are in a position where all of their drivers occupy the top five in the championship which is a huge for the team.
As for Chip Ganassi Racing they just have Scott Dixon in the running however this is something that Team Penske President Tim Cindric is well aware of and knows that despite having four drivers in the run in the running for the championship Penske have an uphill battle against the Iceman.
Dixon has been in this position so many times before wheras points leader Josef Newgarden is in his first season with Team Penske and it is the first time he has been in contention for a championship.
The fact that Newgarden has all of his team mate’s in the running for the title however could be seen as a disadvantage.
At Chip Ganassi Racing, Dixon has three team mates who are in a position to help him win his fifth championship if that scenario arises.
Speaking to Paddock Eye earlier this week, Team Penske President Tim Cindric said they would see how the race plays out on Sunday before making a decision as to what they should do.
