The 2021 NTT IndyCar Series kicked off in style as O’Ward in the No.5 Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet starting the opening race of the season from pole position and coming home in fourth place.
In the second race of the season, the Firestone Grand Prix of St Petersburg, O’Ward started the race from sixth and came home in 19th place. In the opening race of the doubleheader at Texas Motor Speedway, the Genesys 300, O’Ward started the race from eleventh place on the grid to come home in third place.
In Sunday’s XPEL 375, O’Ward started the race from fourth place and took his first career win coming home ahead of Josef Newgarden and Graham Rahal. Speaking following the race, Pato O’Ward commented saying:
“Finally!” “That was long race, but we had so much pace in the Arrow McLaren SP No. 5. We got the job done today, man. I couldn’t be happier for a group of guys. It’s Texas. It’s very close to my heart. Many Mexicans were out there in the grandstands, so thank you guys so much.”
O’Ward has now moved into second place in the championship on 131 points, 22 behind defending series champion, Scott Dixon.
