Mercedes AMG PETRONAS F1 Team Principal and CEO Toto Wolff says that not having Kimi Raikkonen in a Ferrari next season is a blow to everyone in the sport.
Wolff believes that the Iceman is authentic and his move to Sauber for 2019 will be a lose for Ferrari and he says that Kimi and Ferrari fit and were an attractive combination. The Finn ended his final season with Ferrari in third place in the championship
The 2018 season was the Iceman’s best year with the team since returning to the Prancing Horse in 2014 replacing Fernando Alonso.
The Finn took his first victory since 2013 at the United States Grand Prix in Austin Texas with that event voted the fan favourite for the 2018 FIA Formula One season. Raikkonen also scored multiple podium finishes and scored a pole position at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza in September.
Wolff understands why Kimi has stayed in Formula One because he is passionate about racing and the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team are also passionate about racing and he sees no reason why the pairing can’t be successful and ones to watch in 2019.
Wolff also pointed to the fact that the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team are based just 40 minutes away from Kimi’s home meaning that he doesn’t have to move and also means he can spend more time with his family.
Raikkonen drove the 2018 Sauber at the end of season Pirelli test at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi.
