Fernando Alonso’s Formula One career may be coming to an end however that doesn’t mean he is hanging up his helmet altogether. The double Formula One world champion will contest the 2019/20 FIA World Endurance Championship season with Toyota but he may also have other racing plans for 2019.
On Friday more details were released about the Spainard’s car swap with Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series driver Jimmie Johnson.
Alonso appeared via video link to host a joint press conference with Johnson at ISM Raceway.
The pair confirmed that it is not just a publicity stunt with Johnson confirming he will head to the McLaren Technology Centre next week to spend time in the simulator and for a sit fitting.
It is unclear as to whether or not Alonso will do the same, given the fact that he is preparing for the Six Hours of Shanghai which takes place next weekend.
Alonso would not be doing the test just for the sake of it and get publicity. The Spaniard has always expressed an interest in trying other forms of motorsport and with Johnson’s crew and car travelling to Bahrain for the test we could see Hendrick Motorsports prepare a car for Alonso to do a one off race in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series in 2019.
McLaren CEO Zak Brown has already confirmed that Fernando Alonso has a very busy schedule in 2019 with the Spaniard competing full-time in the FIA World Endurance Championship and it is possible that he could do a one off return to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the 103rd running of the Indianapolis 500 next May.
Alonso has experience on ovals having competed in the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500 with Andretti Autosport in partnership with McLaren. It will be interesting to see what his NASCAR test with Hendrick Motorsports leads to. Watch This Space!
