Chevrolet Dual In Detroit Race 1 P1 Award winner Simon Pagenaud in the No.22 Hewlett Packard Enterprises Chevrolet was happy with the performance of his Firestone tyres during qualifying on Saturday.

The Frenchman who is leading the Verizon IndyCar Series points standings opted to run to the Black walled Firestone rubber for his run in qualifying and set a time of 01:14.9166s.

Obviously there was a bit of strategy on our side with the Firestone tires, We chose to go on the black Firestone tires (in the Firestone Fast Six). They’re working really well for us and it paid off, so I’m really, really delighted.

Pagenaud took the P1 Award by 0.0119s ahead of his Penske team mate Helio Castroneves in the No.3 Hitachi Chevrolet. Speaking after just missing out on claiming the track record Castroneves commented by saying:

I was supposed to do that track record on the last one, not the first one, But at the end of the day, you don’t pick and choose. … At least starting on the front row is always good, so we’ll go get them tomorrow.

Castroneves secured his first of 29 Verizon IndyCar Series victories here in the year 2000.
