Former McLaren Formula One driver Kevin Magnussen has claimed that the Woking based outfit had guaranteed the Dane a 2015 seat alongside Fernando Alonso but that they went back on their word.
Magnussen has made the claim to Danish publication Ekstra Bladet
I was told that it was my seat, [I was told] that I did not need to worry. I cannot remember [when] exactly, but at the end of the season.
This would explain why during the launch of the MP4-30 Magnussen looked so grumpy in front of the media. Magnussen claims that towards the end of the 2014 season Button had made it clear that he would be retiring at the end of the season.
Magnussen claims that in his drivers room for the final two races in Brazil and Abu Dhabi that the 2009 world champion had pictures up on the wall from his motor racing career and that when the team announced that Button was staying on alongside Alonso late last year it was completely unexpected.
Magnussen drove in the opening race of the 2015 season however at the Australian Grand Prix as Alonso was unable to race.
