Former Formula One driver Jenson Button took victory in 2018 Super GT Championship with Honda in Japan on Sunday morning in his first season in the championship. Driving a Honda NSX, a third place finish in Motegi was enough for Button to claim his first major motorsport title since winning the Formula One world championship with Brawn in 2009.

Button made his way through GT300 traffic with his team mate and speaking following the race, Button said:

That was a tough race. “They are never easy and that’s what makes it extra-special.

“This championship is one of the toughest in the world. That’s coming from someone who has raced in F1 for so many years.

Button who has also been competing in the FIA World Endurance Championship with SMP Racing went on to say:

I feel a bit like visitor to this team because these guys have been fighting for so long.

“I couldn’t be happier. It’s a long time coming from me.

Speaking about the championship win, the 2009 F1 champion said:

The last championship I won was nine years ago. That was quite a big one, and this for me at the moment feels just as big. This is so important.

Button paid tribute to his team mate Naoki Yamamoto who finished runner up in the series to the Englishman.
