Team Penske’s Helio Castroneves set a course record on his way to claiming his second pole position at the Phoenix International Raceway on Friday. The Brazilian who took his first P1 Award here in 2005 set an average speed of 192.324mph.
Castroneves has claimed 46 Verizon IndyCar Series pole position and speaking following the session he commented by saying:
I called that ‘code brown, It was scarier than I expected. It was a moment. It was interesting. It was in Turn 4 actually, which was something we never had [before]. The first lap was really big and I was really happy with the balance of the car. I was very surprised actually that it happened. You’ve got to push the limit and we definitely pushed the limit here today. But the REV Group Chevrolet was really, really strong. Now we have to keep pushing so, hopefully, we finish at the top. At 19 seconds a lap, it is pretty impressive. The fans that are going to be here at Phoenix are going to see the fastest cars in the world going around this place tomorrow. It’s going to be amazing.
