Juan Pablo Montoya isn’t the only Team Penske driver who is out of contract, while all the attention has been on whether or not Josef Newgarden will replace Montoya at the outfit, it should also be taken into account that Helio Castroneves is also out of contract.
Castroneves, who has yet to win a Verizon IndyCar Series title has won three Indianapolis 500’s with ‘The Captain’ is hopeful that he will back in the No.3 Chevrolet next season.
Despite not winning championship, Castroneves has 29 races wins to his name along with 47 P1 Awards. The Brazilian’s last victory came at in Detroit in 2014. Castroneves ended the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series in third place in the championship on 504 points.
Castroneves was extremely consistent in 2016, scoring four podium finishes with two second place finishes and two third place finishes.
Castroneves has confirmed that he has spoken with Roger Penske but that no deal has been agreed for the 2017 season, with Penske saying that when Castroneves finally decides to hang up his helmet that he would like the Brazilian to do one off Indianapolis 500 races.
Penske has confirmed that it will still be a number of weeks before the team confirm their line up for next season, but former Ed Carpenter Racing driver Josef Newgarden is on the short list to take at least one of the Penske seats for next season.
