The Verizon IndyCar Series season finale takes place in less than two weeks with just two drivers in the running for the championship.
Team Penske’s Simon Pagenaud leads the championship standings by 43 points from team mate Will Power having led the series points since the second race of the year. The series finale GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma is worth double points.
If Simon Pagenaud wins the race the championship is over. In order for Power to win he has to win the race and for Pagenaud to fail to finish or end the race lower than ninth.
Pagenaud will be champion if he wins the race regardless of what Power does.
If Power wins the race earning the P1 Award, leads the most laps and gets fastest lap of the race he will receive 103 point which would bring his tally to 615 points.
If Pagenaud finishes second with Power winning race, Pagenaud wins the championship by 20 points if he does receive any bonus points for leading the race. If Pagenaud finishes in third place with Power winning the Frenchman wins the title by ten points.
If Pagenaud finishes the race in fourth place without bonus points he ends the championship on 619 winning the title by four points.
If Pagenaud finishes the race in fifth place, without leading the race or getting any bonus points he will receive 60 points that would bring his points tally to 615 points setting up a tie with Power winning the championship by virtue of the fact that Power would have one more win than Pagenaud as they are currently tied on four wins a piece.
If neither Pagenaud or Power win the race Pagenaud wins the championship.
