Scuderia Ferrari mechanic Francesco Cigarini is on the road to recovery following successful surgery on his left leg in Bahrain on Sunday night. The Italian was injured while performing a pit-stop on Kimi Raikkonen’s car in the closing stages of the 57 lap race.
Raikkonen was given the green light to leave his pit-box even though the team had failed to secure the left rear tyre to his car, as the Finn left he hit Cigarini who suffered a double fracture on his leg.
Many fans unfairly criticized Raikkonen in the immediate aftermath of the accident for not going to check on his mechanic however what they did not see was that the Iceman was ushered away from the scene by his Ferrari colleagues as paramedics treated Cigarini at the scene.
Following his surgery, Cigarini took to his instagram feed to say:
Surgery ok. I have to thank all the people worried for me. Nothing else, just a big thanks. Hugs! L’operazione è andata bene. Voglio ringraziare tutte le persone che hanno chiesto di me e si sono preoccupate. Solo un grande GRAZIE. Abbracci #thanks#grazie
Kimi Raikkonen commented on the post saying:
Get well soon mate.
Francesco posted a video to his instagram on Monday showing walking on crutches with the help of one of his doctors. #GetWellSoonFrancesco
