Team Penske president Tim Cindric has confirmed that newly crowned Verizon IndyCar Series champion Simon Pagenaud will run with the number 1 on his car in 2017.

Pagenaud, who won his first title for Penske in Sonoma last weekend, has used the number 22 on his team Penske Chevrolet since joining the outfit ahead of the 2015 season. Pagenaud won five races on his way to the championship.

The Frenchman won at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, The Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama, the Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis, the Honda 200 at Mid-Ohio and the season finale, GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma. Cindric confirmed the news on Twitter in response to a question, saying:

will be sporting the #1 in 2017. Hopefully, we can keep it in the family for awhile.
